The spookiest of evenings (other than the Hungry Ghosts Festival of course) is upon us! To show your appreciation for all things Halloween, there is no need to leave any cans of Lilt, cigarettes or any other offerings to your ancestors. Just get down to Perch and nerd out over this weird and wonderful celebration.
So you should all know how this works by now: Nerd Night follows the Pecha Kucha format. Each participant has 20 slides to get through, on whichever weird and wonderful topic they choose. Each slide will change automatically after 20 seconds and the speakers need to perfectly manage that flow to both hold your attention and keep up with the 20 second format. It can be brutal and it can be an amazing way to learn about a fascinating new topic in just a few minutes.
So let’s have a look at the speakers
Derrick Murray will take us through the ‘Physiological and Biomechanical Analysis’ of …a zombie. The running coach has almost certainly given this some serious thought when trying to motivate himself or a client to pick up the pace!
Jordan Johnson will seek to inspire a real appreciation of Horror as a backbone of cinema. Johnson is fighting against the tendency to diminish the horror genre as some low-brow level of entertainment – the undead rom-com, if you will – instead championing horror as crucial in defining cinemas and developing some of film’s greatest creators.
Katy Lo Wing ask the timeless question: How to make spooky music? What is it that gives us those chills down our spine? Why do some notes, or instruments, just drive something unsettling inside us? Wing will take us through some examples of music in film and classical composing that are used for Halloween and how you don’t need to be all that musical to even write some spooky songs of your own…
Patrick Booth gives an insight into a daily fantasy experience for millions. Dungeons and Dragons is known by many but understood by so few. This true nerdy experience will see Booth try and spread a bit of knowledge over his passion and what better time of year to give a more context to both dragons and dungeons?
Then, finally, it’s the nerd off. A light hearted approach to the same Pecha Kucha format where two brave participants are given 20 slides they have never seen before and try to convince the audience they are actually experts!
Get to Perch on St. 282 for 7:45 with talks kicking off at 20:01… and keep an eye out for more great Nerd Nights coming up soon.
