Set Sail for Educational Advances: Aogaah’s Mekong Dinner Cruise

Free food? A delightful free boat ride? What’s the catch?
Here’s the thing, there’s no catch. Even better, there’s a cause. And, it’s a great one.

On Monday, Cambo Cruise offers a picturesque trip along the Mekong with a delicious on-board buffet. But there’s a twist: while usually there would be a price tag attached, this night the trip and dinner are FREE.

Free food? A delightful free boat ride? What’s the catch? .. Well, there is no catch. Even better, it’s all for a great cause.

What’s the Cause?

It’s the return of the annual fundraising dinner cruise from the Aogaah Foundation, which raises money from drinks sales on board. Cambo cruise will donate all profits directly to the foundation, and donations are welcomed. Charles, the host, will also match all donations up to $500!

A Proper Party…

During the trip, live Khmer music will accompany the festivities and upon return to the dock at 8.30pm the party shall continue for another few hours – inviting all those that couldn’t make the cruise to join the afterparty.

Who are Aogaah?

Aogoaah is Khmer for “opportunity” and the organisation is a longstanding educational charity that provides opportunities to impoverished children, through free Community Schools. These schools, which are based in the Tuol Kork district, are certified by the Cambodian government and offer entirely free education (a rarity in Cambodia), including all learning materials.

Here’s what they have to say about their work:

“In Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2003  a retired math teacher from the US started a school for impoverished kids living in a squatter area.   The school’s mission is to teach the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic so the students may someday find meaningful employment. Currently there are over 140 kids enrolled in grades Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.   In Cambodia, students must pay a daily fee to attend public (government) school.  But this school is totally free to the students and their families.”
