The weekend is here! And I don’t know about you, but we are ready to PARTY. Here’s your guide to the very best the city has to offer from now until Sunday evening.

Friday

Eating & Drinking

Fed up of swigging the same three draft beers? TGIF is back at Kingdom Taproom! For just $7, you get unlimited delicious beers (our faves are the white beer and the IPA) all night, and for $12 you get that plus an burger from the legendary Mike’s Burgers (we’re assured there’s a veggie option available too). Plus, a House & Funk set from Phnom Penh Underground. Friday night doesn’t get better than that! (6pm-11pm @ Kingdom Breweries, National Road 5. Tickets available on the door).

Elsewhere, BritCham is holding its first Friday Social at Tiger’s Eye, with free flowing canapes and two drinks included in your $15 ticket – basically, it’s networking and nibbles. (Tiger’s Eye, Sothearos Boulevard), Open Wine Restaurant hosts “A Night in Casablanca” – Royal Couscous, oriental desserts and cocktails, accompanied by live piano (6-10pm, St 19), new drinking spot Crush Wine Bar offers 20% off to celebrate its soft launch (6pm-Midnight, St 294) and Tropical Lounge is holding an awesome “Go Unlimited” party around the pool, with free-flowing BBQ, cocktails and a bunch of other temptations on offer from 6-9pm (Tropical Lounge, St 400, BKK1).

Cinema

A few options for your Friday date-night movie this week..!

For something that makes you DEFINITELY NOT CRY YOU’VE JUST GOT SOMETHING IN YOUR EYE, check out Megan Leavy, the true story of a US marine’s battle to bring home the bomb-sniffer dog that saved her life in Iraq. (8.30pm @ Flicks 1, St 95)

If you’re looking for a big, bold, sci-fi action flick, there’s Seven Sisters (confusingly, also called What Happened to Monday?), about identical septuplets born into a futuristic dystopia where no one is allowed more than one child. To save them, their father pretends there’s only one, and assigns each of them a day of the week where they’re allowed to go outside. It works until they reach adulthood, when the state catches on and kidnaps “Monday”. (Legend Cinemas, various times)

And lastly, for a frivolous Friday film, the smash hit jazz musical La La Land is playing at Outpost (7-9pm, next to the Sokha Hotel)

Art & Photography

Street art is taking over META House tonight at the awesome Vinyl & Vandals night, with graffiti and pop art from Macvillan, a pop-up store from 40 Thieves and, later, a top lineup of DJs dropping funk, soul, hip hop and drum & bass. (6pm-2am @ META House, Sothearos Boulevard)

If you’d rather create your own stuff, get over to Cloud’s Paint & Sip night, where $20 gets you a painting class and a glass of wine (5.30-7.30pm @ Cloud, St 9)

Live Music

The lovely Mirasol brings jazz-soul fusion to Farm to Table tonight (6.30-8.30pm, St 360, BKK1), Scoddy & Joe Wrigley take you back to 1950s Rock’n’Roll at Botanico Beer & Wine Garden (9pm-1.30am, St 29), while at Show Box, Malaysian singer-songwriter-guitarist Raggy performs witty, well-crafted hits from his last three albums. (7.30-10pm @ Show Box, St 330)

Club Nights

As ever, you can depend on Top Banana (St 278) and MadHouse (St 172) to deliver a late night Friday rave – the latter welcomes DJ Joshi and a bunch of other top DJs to the decks until 7am. Meanwhile, at Petanque, DJ Watts Up & Lazy P serve up funky house and techno until 2am, with a side of $2.50 punch and Roots & Burgers specials. (9pm-2am @ Petanque, St 155)

Saturday

Eating & Drinking

Happy Birthday, Alchemy! The slick, sophisticated venue in Russian Market is celebrating its first anniversary tonight with top wines, locally brewed beers, live music, a late night DJ set, BBQ, cigars and cocktails. The first 75 people to arrive get a free glass of bubbly, too (6pm-2am, St 123).

Haven’t managed to track down the perfect Indian restaurant in Phnom Penh? Make it yourself! This afternoon there’s a one-off class from Indian Cooking Courses, teaching you how to make the perfect Butter Chicken. (3-4pm, Elite Town, Koh Pich).

Art & Photography

If you haven’t checked out the excellent street art gallery, KBach, now’s the perfect opportunity – they’re holding a pre-auction exhibit of the best work all day today. Proceeds from the auction will go to Shanty Town Spirit, too, so it’s for a very good cause (11am-6pm), KBach Gallery, St 178).

Meanwhile, Sa Sa Art Projects hosts a talk with Thai artist Latthapon Korkiatarkul (6-7.30pm, Sa Sa Art Space, St 350) and there’s poetry and spoken word performance at A Nook for Rhyme Crooks, over at Cloud (St 9).

Journalism

Worried for the future of the press here in the Kingdom? With the Cambodia Daily and Radio Free Asia under threat, that’s understandable… and now’s your chance to get answers, at META House’s Journalist Town Hall Meeting (5-9pm @ META House, Sothearos Boulevard)

Sport

Learn to swing those hips at Dance Academy Cambodia’s salsa class this afternoon (4.45-5.45pm @ DAC, St 51)…

Live Music

Tonight’s Bassac Lane street party stars eclectic funk-rock-pop outfit The Boxchords (8.30pm-Midnight, Bassac Lane, St 308) – it’s set to be a great night!

If you’d prefer cheaper drinks and an indoor location, head around the corner to DJ Guesthouse, where nordic-folk acoustic singer-songwriter Caroline Rowland graces the stage with her lyrical gorgeousness (7.30-10.30pm, St 29)… 

… or get your rock covers fix from Peter Doyle at Sharky Bar (9pm-Midnight, St 130) or The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s On the Corner (10pm-1am, St 13 & 104).

Club Night

Max Mason is back at Duplex this weekend with another creative tropical-techno-house set you won’t be able to stop yourself dancing along to (8pm-Midnight @ Duplex, St 278).

Meanwhile at Bouchon Wine Bar’s Elektropical night, DJ Watts Up is back (he’s killing it this weekend, right?), while Pioneer DJ Battle Champion, DJ Maily, shows off why she’s fast becoming known as Queen of the Cambodian Dance Floor (11pm-4am @ Club Love, St 278).

If you’re still going by then, Moudy, Heka and Greg J are keeping MadHouse pumping until 7am (MadHouse, St 172). Or, of course, there’s always Pontoon.

Sunday

Eating & Drinking

There’s no better way to spend a sunny afternoon in Phnom Penh than at a pool party: FACT. Happily, Hotel Cambodiana is happy to oblige, opening up their fabulous pool for another Heineken-sponsored, free-entry extravaganza. (3-8pm, Hotel Cambodiana, Sisowath Quay).

Or, ease your hangover with Bloody Marys, beers, bacon butties and banging beats at foodie favourite Tiger’s Eye, hopefully with a little less alliteration on the day (11am-5pm, Tiger’s Eye, Sothearos Boulevard).

Art & Performance

Culture vultures will be thrilled with Lkhoan Khoal, a one-off event at the iconic Chaktomuk Hall that showcases Khmer arts and culture from all over over the country (9am-9pm, Sisowath Quay).

Sport

Up early? Get active AND raise some money for a deserving cause at Olympic Stadium, where you can run a manageable 2km in aid of environmental charity ACE. IT costs $5 to take part and you get a free t-shirt, so everyone’s a winner, really. (6.30-10.30am, Olympic Stadium)

Film

There’s another true-story tear-jerker at Flicks 1 tonight – the bittersweet tale of “Maudie”, a shy, artistic woman who just wants to paint, but ends up as the housekeeper of a gruff farmer in Nova Scotia to support herself. The film stars Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke (but no hawks, unfortunately) – critics are calling it the performance of both their careers.

Live Music

As well as your weekly dose of house band K’n’E at Oscar’s On the Corner (10pm-1am, corner St 13 & 104), there’s also a one-off show from aussie musician Coast & Ocean at Show Box. Fresh from a global tour, his confessional lyrics and innovative acoustic compositions make this an excellent way to round off your weekend.
