Lunch At BKK Market: A Foody Must

Boeung Keng Kang Market is often the place to go for young Cambodians looking to buy fashion items with questionable legitimacy at a reasonable price. Shoppers will also be able to find many stalls that sell vintage clothing, shoes and bags from other parts of Asia. Beyond fashion and its abundance of beauty parlours; BKK market is often where many go to buy the most delicious, fresh and cheap ingredients for preparing meals at home.

At What’s On Phnom Penh, we urge you to not JUST take these ingredients home. You should pull up a comically small and unstable stool, find a way to contort your body to fit on said stool and prepare to feast for less than a dollar. BKK market is simply one of the best places in the city to get a delicious and very cheap lunch.

The ingredients are as fresh as you can get. The abundance of leafy green vegetables make the neutral toned market seem like it has been beautifully decorated with the most exquisite watercolours. The smell of fresh fish, huge chunks of steak and mouth watering racks of ribs is somehow not off putting as it is counterbalanced so well by the wonderful aroma of a garden of fresh fruit and vegetables.Image 04-04-2017 at 17.19Image 04-04-2017 at 17.21Image 04-04-2017 at 17.2117779092_10158406351735612_765921876_o17777066_10158406351380612_1298153719_o17759255_10158406350345612_510746890_o17797725_10158406352575612_1540519795_o

You will choose a table that suits your general feeding requirements- Seafood, meat or vegetarian. When you sit down the delightfully warm lady who runs the stall will just start to make you a meal. We had a seafood noodle soup. The noodles were soft, thick,  fresh and addictive. Much of this may be a placebo effect but it feels like you can taste a big difference between the freshest of the fresh noodles in BKK market and just anywhere else you have ever had noodles. The seafood is wonderful and fresh and most importantly plentiful with no repetition.

The best part of eating at BKK market? Looking at adjacent stalls and asking to have some more ingredients added into your dish. Halfway through my seafood I decided to add some crab and Cambodian style sushi to my lunch. It barely makes a dent in the price and your senses will thank you for it.

A large bowl of delicious fresh food at BKK market will set you back between $1 and $1.50, depending on how many extra ingredients you choose to include. It is a filling and joyous occasion. It also supports local Khmer business. BKK Market for lunch is a the smart and delicious decision to make today.

BKK Market is located on Street 380 in BKK 1.
