What to Do In Phnom Penh This Weekend

Friday

What’s On Show

Vital bodies, and exciting new exhibition of artworks by Mirabelle Yang, Phavine Phung and Ken Dichi, opens tonight at Cloud (6pm, St 9)

What’s On Stage

There’s music for every taste tonight: blues at META House (9pm, Sothearos Boulevard), pop covers from Unity Band at Alchemy (11pm, St 123), Khmer golden age classics by the amazing Miss Sarawan on the FCC Rooftop (Sisowath Quay) and by Sophea & Bong An at Mini Banana (7pm, just off St 51), Khmer rock from Phka Kabass at Tacos Kokopelli (St 19z, 7pm-10pm), acoustic covers by Randy Centeno at Top Banana (9.30pm, St 278), and Scott Bywater’s latest collaboration, with singer Ariane, at Botanico (7pm, St 29)

What’s On Late

The really, really big one tonight is also the last ever at Tusk. With the building having been sold off for redevelopment, the beloved bar is also being turfed out. Naturally, Complicated business are playing, as is DJ Sushii Firas and a bunch of other people. It’s gonna be a messy (and tearful) one (from 9pm, St 278)

Over in Tuol Tom Poung, there’s also Prince Tribute night at Sundown Social (6pm – late St 440), while DJ Cathrin spins EDM, Hip hop and Twerk at EPIC Club (9pm-3am, behind Russian Embassy) and DJ Katoy plays Sound Club (9pm-4am – National Assembly St).

Saturday

What’s On The Menu

Feeling really, REALLY flush? Topaz hosts a dinner with Benoit Vidal, a chef with two Michelin stars under his belt, for $125pp (or $180 with wine and champagne pairing)  (6pm, Norodom Boulevard – more info here)

What’s On Show

A fascinating new photography exhibition opens at Java Creative Cafe tonight: Khiev Kanel’s Staircases explores the history of the White Building through its stairwells. Khiev will also give a talk on his work (6.30pm, Java, Sihanouk Boulevard, near Independence Monument).

What’s On Screen

Khmer classic Tep Sodachan, about a goddess who falls to earth and then in love with a lowly mortal, screens at the Bophana Centre at 5pm.

What’s On Stage

Hameer Zawawi is an amazing performer with a unique alt-folk sound that’s already proving very influential in his native Malaysia – and he’s stopping here in Phnom Penh as part of his world tour. Even better, he’s playing in Counter Space, an awesome 54-seat theatre in Java’s brand new arts centre in Tuol Tom Poung. He’ll be performing with Joe Wrigley and Nebojsza Trajkovicsz, and you can buy tickets here (or at the venue).

Elsewhere, RDA perform classic country songs from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s (8pm, Alchemy, St 123), not to be confused with DNA, who are playing international and Khmer pop covers at Top Banana (10pm, St 278). There are also soulful covers of pop hits past from Euphoria at Sharky’s Bar (9pm, St 130)

What’s On Late

DJ Bree is on the decks at Chinese House… and Espresso Martinis are just $4. Result. (Chinese House, Sisowath Quay). Cringily named duo Black and Yellow (or DJ Illest and Dillydallon, separately) play Pontoon… and Jack Daniels is on 2-4-1 special, so you might actually be able to afford a drink in there this time (St 172, 9pm-4am).

If reggae’s more your thing, head to Cloud’s Up Into the Sky (8pm-1am, St 9), or for salsa, try Duplex’s Saturday night salsa party (8pm-2am, St 278)

Sunday

What’s On the Menu

Tea fiends will not leaf disappointed (sorry. I’m so sorry) from ARTillery today: there’s a very special high tea on offer, with all kinds of teas to choose from, plus a creative selection of finger foods and teeny tiny desserts ($12pp, vegan option available. St 240 1/2)

What’s On Show

Check out this excellent pop-up exhibition by KBach street art gallery at Exchange Square. It’s runs until the end of the month:

What’s On Screen

The Flicks is screening Samsara, a beautifully shot, dialogue-free, visual study of the global circle of life. It’s hard to explain, so you know, just go see it (4pm, Flicks 1, St 95)
