Tonight Friday (26th) the Phnom Penh Jazz club will host the great and belove acoustic duo- ‘Miss Sarawan’ from 9pm with free entry.
Mealea Lay with Joe Wrigley have been said to elegantly Cambodian and Western musical influences of the 1960s and 1970s. Lay began with her career while taking refuge inside a Phnom Penh temple after fleeing from Kampong Cham Province. The monks at Wat Sarawan encouraged the diminutive diva with 5000 riel per song.
Mealea doesn’t live in the temple anymore, but she still spends her days intoning the rich Khmer catalog, with a voice that has been compared to a Houy Meas or Ros Seryesothea. Along the way she has teamed up with country bumpkin Joe Wrigley, who offers acoustic guitar backing and cowboy counterpoint.
