Hailing from a city consumed by gourmet burger chains, I’ve grown accustomed to craving pimped-up patties.  In this series, I hit the streets of Phnom Penh to sniff out the very best burgers on offer.

The Burger Joint

Across from the Italian Stallions at il Forno, you’ll find Che Culo hanging out on Street 302. The slick decor instantly creates a vibe that oozes coolness. They’ve a few midweek offerings of interest, such as ‘Taco Tuesdays’ ($2 Tacos) and ‘Wing Wednesdays’ ($3 chicken wings).

Grab a booth, pick a cocktail and peruse through a short eclectic food menu with Greek, Spanish, Italian and other influences rearing their head.

Side note, ‘Che Culo!’ in Italian means ‘That ass!’. Fun.

The Burger

With only one burger on the menu, I deciphered that the ‘CCFC burger’ was the Che Culo Fried Chicken burger – rather than Che Culo Football Club. My main excitement was caused from the sriracha mayo, whilst the expected salad garnishes of lettuce and tomatoes were noted.

On the Side

While the gourmet burger trend blossomed in Scotland, I noticed the accompanying penchant for sweet potato fries rose too. Che Culo keeps in with the cool kids and serves up a side of sweet potato fries with their burger, however you can ask to swap these for the slightly cheaper portion of patatas bravas.

The sweet potato fries were delicious but the portion was fairly small, with less than 10 fries to gobble. Savour them, the Mexican hot sauce is a delightful addition for these.

First Impressions

The generous cushion of lettuce and tomato hang out the side of the burger, making it aesthetically pleasing. I do love a great salad – despite running a burger column.

The crispy coated fried chicken looked delicious, and the mayo did not fail to disappoint as I saw it conquering the chicken in a chin-dripping heavy coating. The tang added by the sauce really made the burger for me, transforming a relatively safe original burger option into a dish the restaurant could tip as a fan favourite.

The chicken was great, perfectly cooked and the coating just crispy enough yet soft enough that it ticked all boxes. I usually prefer going for beef options with my burgers, but the delicious CFCC has inspired me to explore more clucky alternatives.

The Verdict

Visiting at 9pm meant that the $2 tacos had ran out, but I’m glad they had as it prompted my discovery of the CFCC burger. $6 for a delicious burger and side is super fair.  I’d give the CFCC burger 8.5/10 –  Whilst not pushing the boundaries on burgers, Che Culo have nailed their chicken burger and championed a simple combination of toppings to put this burger on the map.
